Team roping, or “heading and heeling”, is a thrilling rodeo event where two cowboys (or cowgirls) on horseback chase and rope a steer in seconds. Rooted in ranch work, it’s a test of speed, skill, and teamwork.
The Header: Rides from the right, ropes the steer’s horns or neck, then turns it left.
The Heeler: Follows from the left, ropes both hind legs.
The Goal: Catch and stop the steer as fast as possible, with both riders’ ropes taut.
Top teams finish in under 4 seconds. Miss a catch or one leg? Penalties apply. It’s precision, partnership, and pure adrenaline!
The Madonna Inn Qualifier, held August 7-10, 2025, at the Madonna Inn Arena in San Luis Obispo, was a prime showcase of team roping action. Hosted by Flying T Cattle Co., this event drew top ropers competing for a spot in the WSTR Finale. Set against the iconic, kitschy backdrop of the Madonna Inn, it blended cowboy grit with Central Coast charm. I’ve spent there three hours photographing the ropers.
